Mary Wanless MAY 2022 Clinic

Finally! She’s back!!

Facility: Loch Moy in Adamstown, MD. Rider spots are full but go here to get your auditing tickets.

Dates: May 21, 22, 23

Housing for auditors available first come first serve at a location about half an hour away from the venue, $25/night/person. Contact me about it if you’re interested.

Welcome! The clinic is now full, but if you want to get onto the waiting list to ride, please get in touch.

Auditors: Please bring your own chair.

Mary will be wearing a mic so auditors and riders can hear her. Please save questions for the discussion period of the day (after lunch).

Audio or video taping of lessons is prohibited, unless it is at the rider's request, for the rider's personal use.

**Attendance all 3 days is highly recommended by Mary due to the nature of the specific language developed between coach and rider as the clinic progresses.**

Auditors, please bring your own chair. We will be indoors, but will not have enough chairs for everyone.

Clinic schedule for all 3 days:

9am - lesson 1 (two riders)

10am - lesson 2 (two riders)

11am - lesson 3 (two riders)

Noon - Lunch in the lounge

1pm - Q&A / Discussion in the lounge

2pm - lesson 4 (two riders)

3pm - lesson 5 (two riders)

4pm - lesson 6 (two riders)

Each rider will ride three times, one ride each day, for a total of 3 lessons. This means auditors can watch the progress of each rider over the course of the 3 days, which can be quite a profound experience due to the rider’s being able to sleep on the lesson (and perhaps insights from the Q&A), and come back ready to build on their learning the next day.

After lunch each day Mary will lead the Q&A/discussion, which will be held in the Loch Moy guest house. Auditors and riders are encouraged to ask questions and participate in un-mounted exercises led by Mary.

Lunch is provided all 3 days of the clinic to all riders and auditors: soda/water/hot drinks, two or three entree choices with vegetable on the side and a dessert. Throughout the day coffee and light refreshments will be available. Please let me (Emily) know if you have any food allergy/preference.

The second night of the clinic we always invite everyone attending the clinic to join us for dinner with Mary, usually at a local restaurant.

Another Update! August 18, 2021

We are now focusing on bringing Mary back in the Spring of next year (please cross fingers, everyone).

I don’t know any details yet, especially not DATES, but hopefully will find out by late winter 2022.

Stay tuned.

March 27, 2020

It is with a heavy heart that I postpone the May 2020 Mary Wanless Clinic, but we have no choice, and it’s in everyone’s best interest to stay safe and not spread germs around.

Having spoken with Mary Wanless, I decided it’s best to forego trying to plan a Fall 2020 clinic, and just assume the dust will have settled by May 2021 enough that we will all be back to riding and traveling and all the things we wish we could be doing right now.

I know many of you were looking forward to riding with Mary, as was I. If you’re interested in learning more about Ride With Your Mind, I’m an accredited coach in her system and (once we are cleared to ride and travel) would be happy to either come to you or have you come to one of the locations where I teach on school horses - just see my other pages for more details.

Wishing you all a healthy 2020 and beyond. Stay safe out there.

Bridge Club Meeting at Security Blvd Panera Bread

If you are wondering what Bridge Club is, it's a group I started back when I was feeling alone and clueless about clicker training. "Bridge" is a term sometimes used to mean "click" when people discuss the method. Now I feel surrounded by like minded people who enjoy having fun while teaching their horses! I'm so thankful for the time we get to spend together every month.

During our last gathering we played PORTL, which is the Portable Operant Research and Teaching Lab. Search PORTL Mary Hunter and a web page called The Art and Science of Animal Training will pop up. There you can learn about the game.

I would like to play PORTL again at this meeting, I thought it was really fun last time! I put together more kits so we can have 6 groups of 2 all playing at the same time :)

Next Bridge Club meeting TBD! Covid-19 has put a wrench in our plans, so April May and June we probably won’t meet at all in person, but maybe we can meet virtually. I’ll post a new event if I can figure out how to make it happen :)

Would you like to learn with coaches who can tell you exactly how to sit and to influence the horse? Would you like more 'feel'? Would you like to know what talented riders actually do, and why they cannot convey that knowledge in words? The way you sit has a profound influence on your horse, and for each little change that you make, he changes too. Learn how this works, and you're a winner! Your riding becomes extremely ethical, and your horse miraculously 'gets it'.

THROUGH RIDE WITH YOUR MIND YOU CAN:

- Transform your riding: discover new skills, new insights, new horizons

- Solve your riding problems over a massive spectrum...

- From standing still to be mounted to uneven steps in passage!

- From the confidence to walk, trot, canter to the confidence to compete at your own next level

- From getting started to 'getting the horse on the bit'...

- From 'getting the horse on the bit' to good transitions and collection...

- From basic steering issues to the intricacies of straightness and lateral work

- Feel, see and understand the hidden 'how' of riding!

- Learn how to influence the horse in all paces

- Learn in 'bite-size chunks', in a supportive, safe environment

- Learn how to learn, using Kinaesthetic, Auditory, and Visual input

- Learn what 'talented' riders do, that they may not know they do

Heart of Riding Biomechanics Clinic at Columbia Horse Center

8 hours of privates at Columbia Horse Center meant a long full day of teaching!

The clinic went great, though one horse did need to bow out after only about 5 minutes of riding. Hopefully he and his rider will be back!

I had great fun teaching the CHC students and even a couple CHC instructors, which was a blast. The day was cold, but we all bundled up and luckily the snow that was a possibility stayed to the south.

There was so much positive feedback, I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to share the Ride With Your Mind approach with such a lovely group.

Thank you Leigh, Karen, and all the other riders at CHC!

Mary Wanless Spring 2017 Clinic

What a fabulous clinic, such great improvements in all the horses!

Mary certainly has a way of getting riders to make changes in their body, which results in immediate straightness, suppleness and balance in the horse.

All the riders went away happy :)

SaraKate worked very hard to get her middle to not be so wobbly, and did a great job!

Book a Clinic with Emily at your Barn

If you have a few riders at your barn who would be interested in trying some Ride With Your Mind Biomechanics, I will come to you.

What is RWYM Biomechanics? Here's a little excerpt from Mary Wanless' website:

'YES BUT THIS ISN'T DRESSAGE RIDING/COMPETITION RIDING/CLASSICAL RIDING...'

Oh yes it is! And though it isn't Western riding or Polo, it is the skills that the top few riders in each of these disciplines share, even though they may not recognise that fact. The laws of physics and biomechanics do not change when you change your riding discipline, and they have not changed over time. But by using different language to describe those skills we make them far more accessible and reproducible. Few trainers in any discipline can 'clone' riders who replicate their skills; but we can.

When riders use their body to say it in the language 'horse', their riding becomes extremely ethical, and horses miraculously 'get it'. It takes a while for new skills to become natural, but soon enough the rider appears to have talent!

I am happy to teach anyone and everyone, whether you are an eventer trying to improve your dressage scores, a trail rider trying to feel more secure going up and down hills, or a western rider doing western dressage. I can help dressage riders looking to move to the next level and riding school riders who have reached the limits of their current instructor as well. Nervous riders, nervous horses, and supportive auditors are encouraged!

Learn with your friends: have your trainer ride with me so they learn how to teach biomechanics to you.

Clinics can consist of only mounted lessons, or can include an hour long unmounted workshop, where I'll have interactive demos, illustrations, Q&A time, and show exercises riders can do at home to help build their muscle memory.

Rates vary depending on how far away your barn is and whether or not there is a "ring fee", but I try to keep the cost down so everyone can participate.

Contact me at emily@heartofriding.com or call me at 240-587-RWYM and we can get started!
